Did you know that there are different nail shapes you can file your nails into? You did? You didn't? well, either way, I'm gonna be talking about them in this post, and hopefully help you discover which is best for you. There is actually no "right" type of nail shape, the choice is strictly down to what you prefer, and what looks good on your type of hands and fingers, although some shapes and lengths of nails are not suitable for everyday tasks and jobs.
SQUARE WITH ROUNDED CORNERS
This is basically a square shape, just rounding off at the corners for a softer look that is less likely to catch on clothing. This is a very flattering style for long nails, and helps to keep them strong. This is best suited for longer fingers and narrow nails.
OVAL
This is best suited for nails which are wide or thick, giving them a more delicate and feminine appearance. However, this shape does flatter almost everyone. To achieve the perfect oval shape, file side walls straight to make sure they are even, then shape the side walls into rounded oval, making sure the angles are even on both sides.
ROUND
This is ideal for shorter nails, keeping them strong without breakage. This nail shape is ideal for men and for ladies who work in positions where nails should be short and neat e.g. beauticians and nurses. Not a good nail choice if wearing nail extensions; as this can make the hands look short and chubby. File the side walls straight like a square, then round the free edge into that perfect circle.
SQUARE OVAL (SQUOVAL)
This is an oval shape but with a squared tip, making it strong over the oval. This shape softens wide nail beds and works well for short, wide fingers or long, big fingers.
SQUARE
This is a strong nail shape, but not very flattering. This is best for drawing attention to long nails however the sharp corners can catch on fabrics. Short square nails can make the hands look blunt and heavy.
STRAIGHT WITH OVAL TIPS
For this shape, the sides are allowed to grow straight and the tip is then shaped oval. This gives very strong support to the nail and even if there is damage to the sides, the nail can be filed into a slightly oval shape to maintain the length.
POINTED/STILLETO
For this shape, the sides of the nail are filed away, creating a pointed tip. This shape is very weak, as the sides of the nail loses all the strength of the nail. This is best suited for fashion shows, or those who wear nail extensions and don't need to do much with their hands. This shape is becoming very popular among young adults and celebrities today.
ALMOND
This is a classical and attractive shape that helps to elongate petite hands and fingers. The shape is filed away slightly on the side and shaped into a pointed oval at the tip. This is not a very strong shape, and if it is damaged, the length will have to be shortened to rectify.
DECIDING WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU
If your nail beds are wide, try a squoval shape
If they are narrow, try a square shape to widen and strengthen
If you keep short nails, a rounded shape is best for low maintenance style
You can also look at the Lumuna (cuticle) for nail shaping guidance;
If its more curved, try oval or rounded shapes, and if its flat, go for square or squoval shape.
